Vedic astrology links each of the nine planets (Navagraha) with one gemstone. Together they are called the Navratna. This guide lists every planet with its stone and the usual way of wearing it.

How to choose your gemstone

The stone is chosen from the birth chart, not from the month of birth. An astrologer looks at the lagna, the planets that are favourable for it and the running dasha, and then suggests a stone and its weight. Wearing the stone of an unfavourable planet is traditionally avoided, so take advice before buying.

What makes a gemstone fit for astrological use

  • It is natural, not synthetic or glass-filled.
  • It has good colour and clarity for its type.
  • It comes with a report from an independent gemological laboratory.
  • It is worn touching the skin, in the right metal and on the right day.
